5 Social Distanced Date Ideas

Last year was a shit show — and that’s an understatement. 2021 has to be better, right? If you’ve been brave enough to use that time to make new romantic connections, then you’re probably tired of DMs and Zoom calls by candlelight. Whether you’re looking for the perfect first date idea or just trying to create good memories in this madness, here are five social distanced date ideas (plus a bonus).

01. Share a Laugh.jpg

5. Share A Laugh

The best way to get rid of any date night nerves is with a good laugh. Despite other states keeping doors closed, many venues across Texas are letting the good times roll by adapting to the circumstance and hosting standup comedy. They’re able to make money from ticket sales and drinks while keeping guests at safe distances. Your favorite downtown hotspot may be hosting a lineup this month instead of a concert or a zodiac-sign-birthday-bash. With talented Texans like Houston’s own Billy Sorrells still performing and Joe Rogan planting his flag in the Austin comedy scene, there’s bound to be more big names taking the stage very soon.

01. Drive in.jpg

4. Go Retro

Even though some theatre chains are opening back up, to mixed results, take date night up a notch by taking it back in time. This date night idea is charming and a great chance to make memories that you’ll share with your grandkids one day. Pack up some snacks (if they allow it) and maybe a blanket and check out one of the drive-in movie theaters across the state. Make sure that you clean your Windshield ahead of time. If you’re going to be watching from inside your car, you’ll save yourself time, and a bit of embarrassment by making sure your windshield is clear of dirt and smudges.

01. Meal with a View.jpg

3. A Meal With A View

If you’re in one of the major cities (Austin, Dallas Houston, etc.) then there’s a good chance that you can still plan the perfect date with a view. Some rooftop lounges are still operating and serving food and craft cocktails, so you and your date can indulge in lavish libations while you admire the cityscape and watch the world continue to fall apart. 77 Degrees is currently still open, with rooftop venues in Austin, Dallas and Houston. A personal favorite is Pale Horse in New Braunfels. Between an expansive cocktail menu and flavorful plates, the sunset view over the square is practically perfect.

01. Flowers.jpg

2. A Stroll Among the Flowers

You don’t have to worry about a dozen roses when you’ve got an entire garden to admire. Many of the botanical gardens across Texas are still open and using proper social distancing measures. This means, you’ll be able to stroll about the garden, admiring the foliage while getting to know each other better. The Fort Worth Botanical Garden has a wide range of flowers and shrubs that bloom throughout the year, and right now is a great time to check out flowers including maximilian daily, oxblood lilies, and much more. They’re also hosting various events and activities.

01. Go Bowling.jpg

1. Go Bowling

This one’s a bit of a no-brainer. Bowling alleys were social distancing before it was cool. Each lane offers up ample personal space for you and your date to enjoy a great outing while getting to know each other in person. Most bowling alleys still offer food and drink options as well, and may not require masks while you’re at your lane. Best of all, this date night can offer a bit of friendly competition — just don’t let it make or break the evening.

01. Get Artsy.jpg

Bonus: Get Artsy

Many art galleries across the state have reopened, whether by reservation only or with social distance safety measures in place. Galleries like Houston’s Art of the World Gallery offer the opportunity for you and your special someone to meander about discussing the work of many great artists from across the globe. Not only that, this date idea presents the perfect reason to get dressed up for a change of pace; hopefully you haven’t put on too many pandemic pounds. If appreciating local talent is more your speed, consider Thingz Gallery. If you want to be more hands-on, the check around in your area for a venue that offers painting classes.

Give one of these date ideas a shot with your quarantine companion and make your pandemic paradise — even if it’s just for the day.
