When people talk about Mardi Gras, there’s really only one place that comes to the top of your mind, but if you’re looking for a more unique Mardi Gras experience Galveston has what you’re looking for. This annual celebration is known for its lively parades, colorful floats, and festive atmosphere. Here are a few of the fun features that make Mardi Gras Galveston such a memorable event:

Mardi Gras Galveston is famous for its parades, which feature a wide variety of colorful floats and creative costumes. With multiple uniquely-themed parades, partygoers are likely to see everything from traditional Mardi Gras themes to pop culture references and political satire. One of their more unique parades is The Funky Uptown Umbrella Brigade. Since its inception in 2011, this quirky event has broken the world record for the most decorated umbrellas in a single parade — and an even bigger turnout is predicted for this year.

Fun fact, Mardi Gras! Galveston is the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States. Thankfully, that continued growth hasn’t meant losing sight of features like the beloved beads, one of the most iconic symbols of Mardi Gras. There’s no shortage of beads flying from historic balconies, being flung  from floats, or bartered on the beach with friends and strangers alike.

I’m not gonna lie, when it comes to the music choices of the festival, there’s not much that appeals to a Black audience. With nearly all of their musical lineup consisting of white acts, the best bets for enjoying the sounds of the soirée are DJ Nonstop on the Salute to Texas Stage or Kazzabe, the opening act for Fiesta Gas! — the festival’s Latin-focused branch.

Music may not be a highlight for Black festival goers, but food is a different story.  Mardi Gras is all about indulging, and you'll find plenty of delicious food at the festival. From traditional Cajun and Creole dishes to more modern fare, you'll have plenty of options to choose from. The island boasts amazing seafood options year round, and Mardi Gras only inspires the local culinary scene to step their game up. The bulk of Mardi Gras festivities take place in Galveston’s historic downtown in the Mardi Gras Entertainment District where there’s no shortage of delicious dining options.

Overall, Mardi Gras Galveston is a fun and festive celebration that's perfect for anyone looking to let loose and have a good time. If you love ocean air and outdoor activities, it’s a perfect way to celebrate Fat Tuesday. Gather a group of friends, book a balcony, and get ready for an amazing time — just remember to plan your own playlist.
